Good for the teeth

The team in Indonesia worked with a Malaysian dentist for a week. They assisted her in boiling and cleaning instruments, holding torches to shine light into mouths and advising with pain medication. Many teeth were in such bad condition that extraction was the best treatment.

The village people love to chew “siri,” a concoction of beetlenut and a few choice other ingredients that resembles chewing tobacco. “It’s good for your teeth,” say many of the ladies as they smile through the gaps. Brushing children’s’ teeth is also a concept that has not yet taken hold in West Indonesia, so the arrival of a dentist was a welcomed event.

In just four clinic days, the dentist pulled over 130 teeth of people in a poor rice farming community. In addition, she provided valuable dental health education to the village, local street children and orphans. Her gentle spirit and kind words echoed the love of the Saviour to these communities, speaking the Gospel without using words.

El equipo de Indonesia trabajó con una odontóloga malaya por una semana. Ellos la asistieron en hervir y limpiar instrumentos, sosteniendo linternas para alumbrar dentro de las bocas y ayudando con la medicación para el dolor. Muchos dientes estaban en tan mala condición que sólo se podían extraer.

La gente de la aldea estaba encantada de morder “siri”, una pasta recomendada por la odontóloga para sus dientes. “Es buena para los dientes”, comentaban muchas mujeres sonriendo. Que los niños se cepillen los dientes es un concepto todavía no asimilado en el Oeste de Indonesia, por lo que la llegada de una dentista fue un gran evento!

En sólo cuatro días de atención, la odontóloga extrajo más de 130 dientes de personas que viven en una comunidad de granjas de arroz muy pobres. Además, llevó a cabo un valioso programa de educación dental en la aldea, entre niños de la calle y en orfanatos. Su espíritu gentil y dulces palabras mostraron el amor del Salvador entre estas comunidades, predicando el evangelio sin utilizar palabras.
