Afternoon Clubs Reach Kids

“I am excited to work with children because they are so open to the Gospel,” explains Miika Parkkinen, the newest addition to the OM Finland team. He joined in January to pioneer OM’s children’s ministry.

Miika has started kids clubs in the city of Tampere with the aim of teaching children biblical values through fun activities. Most of the children who attend come from un-churched families and have never heard the Gospel. Many families in the suburbs are immigrants with various religious backgrounds. “With both parents working, many children spend several hours alone each day without adult supervision. Our aim is to connect with these kids and provide a safe place to hang out,” Miika continues. “If we can reach them when they’re young, they won’t get into as much trouble as teenagers.”

The results of the programme have been encouraging. A boy in one of the kids’ clubs was very difficult and nothing seemed to reach him. Later the boy’s mom contacted Miika and told her how he kept telling her about the importance of reading the Bible and praying. Stories like these motivate Miika to continue on.

CLUBES VESPERTINOS PARA NIÑOS – Finlandia
“Me entusiasma trabajar con niños porque están muy abiertos al evangelio”, explica Miika Parkkinen, el miembro más nuevo del equipo de OM Finlandia, quien llegó en enero para comenzar un ministerio entre niños.

Miika ha iniciado clubes de niños en la ciudad de Tampere con el objetivo de enseñar valores bíblicos a los pequeños a través de actividades divertidas. La mayoría de los niños que vienen a los clubes pertenecen a familias que no asisten a una iglesia y nunca han escuchado el evangelio. Muchas familias en los suburbios son inmigrantes y tienen varios trasfondos religiosos. “Con ambos padres trabajando, muchos niños pasan muchas horas solos y sin la supervisión de ningún adulto. Nuestra meta es conectarnos con esos niños y proveerles un lugar seguro donde estar”, continua diciendo Miika. “Si los alcanzamos cuando son pequeños, no se meterán en tantos problemas cuando sean adolescentes.”

Los resultados de los programas son alentadores. Un niño que venía a uno de los clubes era muy difícil y parecía que nada lo conformaba. Luego de un tiempo la mamá del niño le contó a Miika que el niño le dijo que es importante leer la Biblia y orar. Historias como esta motivan a Miika a seguir adelante.
