Crown of Beauty

As a child Yamilett was sexually and physically abused and turned to alcohol when she was six years old. She began using drugs and violence to prove her independence and started dressing like a boy to protect herself against men. Her family often told her she was worthless, and at one point her older brother and sister tried to suffocate her with a pillow. The pain was too much to bear, and Yamilett would often lie in bed saying, “If there is a God, why do You allow this to happen?”

Yamilett finally found the Lord when her brother—the one who had tried to kill her—became a Christian and shared about God’s love for her. Yamilett listened and accepted Christ when she was 25. She decided that she wanted to be the woman God made her to be. Slowly she changed her physical appearance. Her brother even affirmed her, telling her how beautiful she was.

Now, at 31, Yamilett is actively involved with OM Costa Rica. She has gone through counselling, and she shares about how Christ transformed her life. “I feel like my life has been a training school, because now I can reach out to prostitutes, lesbians, and addicts,” says Yamilett. “And I can relate to all of them on a very personal level.”

OM Costa Rica hopes that one day they can support Yamilett as a full-time worker, as it is nearly impossible for her to raise the finances. In spite of this, her dedication to the ministry is undeniable—every time Yamilett wants to be involved in an OM activity she picks coffee beans to earn enough to participate. Cuando era niña Yamilett fue abusada sexual y físicamente y se refugió en el alcohol cuando tenía seis años de edad. Comenzó a usar drogas y a ser violenta para probar que podía ser independiente y se vestía como muchacho para protegerse de los hombres. Su familia le decía que no servía para nada y en una oportunidad su hermana y hermano mayor trataron de asfixiarla con una almohada. El dolor era demasiado para ser soportado así que a veces Yamilett estaba acostada en su cama y decía: “Si hay un Dios, ¿por qué permites que esto me suceda?”

La familia de Yamilett encontró al Señor cuando su hermano (el que trató de matarla) se convirtió a Cristo y compartió acerca del amor de Dios con ella. Yamilett escuchó y aceptó a Cristo cuando tenía 25 años. Decidió ser la mujer que Dios quería que sea. Lentamente cambió su aspecto físico. Su hermano comenzó a confortarla diciéndole lo bonita que era.

Ahora a los 31 años de edad, Yamilett está activamente involucrada en OM Costa Rica. Ha pasado por una etapa de consejería, y ha compartido de cómo Cristo transformó su vida. “Siento que mi vida ha sido una escuela de entrenamiento, porque ahora puedo alcanzar a prostitutas, lesbianas y drogadictos”, dijo Yamilett. “Y puedo identificarme con ellos en una manera muy personal”, agregó.

OM Costa Rica espera poder apoyar a Yamilett como obrera de tiempo completo ya que es casi imposible para ella levantar su sustento. A pesar de esto, su dedicación al ministerio es innegable. Cada vez que Yamilett quiere participar de una actividad de OM, cosecha café y gana suficiente dinero para participar. Por favor ora por Yamilett mientras sigue contando su historia a otros, y ora por el trabajo de OM en Costa Rica.
