A better life

Chandpa comes from a Dalit background. She is married and has two children. Two years ago, Chandpa and her entire family were living in dire poverty. Her husband worked as a daily-wage construction worker while she was a homemaker. The meagre income her husband made was insufficient to meet the family’s needs.

One day, Chandpa learned about the Dalit Education Centre’s Self Help Group (SHG) in her area and she decided to become a member. She quickly learned how a SHG functioned and proactively participated in the activities. She was soon unanimously voted as the SHG’s president.

In 2008, Chandpa received a loan from the SHG. With the loan, she bought a three-wheeled taxi. Her husband drove the taxi and earned a better income. Within nine months, they repaid the entire loan. In 2009, Chandpa requested another loan. This time she used the money to start a small embroidery store, which she now runs efficiently. Together, she and her husband are earning a better income. Recently, the family bought a small house. The children are thrilled that they now have a place to call their own. Chandpa says the SHG has given her and her family a life they could have never before imagined.
 

UNA VIDA MEJOR – India
Chandpa tiene un trasfondo Dalit. Está casada y tiene dos hijos. Hace dos años, Chandpa y toda su familia estaban viviendo en la pobreza extrema. Su esposo trabajaba por día como obrero de la construcción y ella atendía su casa. El magro salario de su esposo no alcanzaba para cubrir las necesidades familiares.

Un día Chandpa escuchó sobre un Grupo de Ayuda Mutua del Centro de Educación Dalit, que funciona cerca de su casa y decidió unirse al mismo. Rápidamente aprendió cómo funciona el grupo y participó proactivamente en las actividades. Pronto fue elegida unánimemente como la presidente del grupo.

En 2008, Chandpa recibió un préstamo del Grupo, con el que compró un taxi de tres ruedas. Su esposo manejaba el taxi y así obtenía un mayor ingreso. En nueve meses devolvieron el préstamo. En 2009, Chandpa pidió otro préstamo. Esta vez era para comenzar un taller de bordado, que ahora está funcionando a pleno. Juntos, ella y su esposo están ganando un mejor salario. Recientemente, la familia compró una pequeña casa. Los niños están fascinados porque ahora tienen un lugar propio. Chandpa comenta que este Grupo de Ayuda Mutua le ha dado a ella y su familia una vida que nunca antes imaginaron.
 

UNE VIE MEILLEURE – Inde
Chandpa vient d’un arrière-plan dalit. Elle est mariée et à deux enfants. Il y a deux ans, Chandpa et toute sa famille vivaient dans une pauvreté terrible. Son mari travaillait dans le bâtiment en tant qu’ouvrier journalier et elle était femme au foyer. Le misérable revenu que son mari recevait ne suffisait pas pour subvenir aux besoins de la famille.

Un jour, Chandpa apprit qu’il y avait un « Groupe de Solidarité » (Self Help Group (SHG)) au Centre d’Education Dalit de son secteur et elle décida de devenir membre. Elle apprit vite comment le SHG fonctionnait et participa avec un grand dynamisme aux activités. Très vite elle était élue présidente du SHG.

En 2008, Chandpa reçu un prêt du SHG. Avec ce prêt, elle acheta un taxi à trois roues. Son mari pu conduire le taxi et recevoir un meilleur revenu. En neuf mois, ils avaient remboursé le prêt. En 2009, Chandpa a demandé un nouveau prêt. Cette fois, elle a utilisé l’argent pour ouvrir une petite boutique de broderie, qu’elle dirige maintenant avec efficacité. Ensemble ils gagnent un meilleur revenu. Récemment, la famille a pu acheter une petite maison. Les enfants sont ravis d’avoir maintenant un chez eux. Chandpa dit que SHG leur a offert, à elle et à sa famille, une vie qu’ils n’auraient jamais pu imaginer.
