Mercy for India's 'maids of the gods'

One of the hot spots of HIV/AIDS in India is the state of Karnataka, where 250,000 young girls from poor families have been dedicated to the goddess Yellamma for socially and religiously sanctioned prostitution. When the famous pilgrimage for Yellamma takes place in January every year, many females from this part of the country are supplied to the sex trade in neighbouring big cities, such as Mumbai. These ‘devadasis’ (‘maids of the gods’) are generally from Scheduled Caste and Dalit backgrounds.

OMCC’s Good Shepherd Healthcare Programme aims to reduce the incidence and transmission of HIV and STIs among the devadasi population. This April, a small team was set up in one of Karnataka’s northern cities to provide community-based care and spiritual support for victims. The strategy includes running a mobile clinic as well as satellite medical camps, and providing nutritional supplements that will strengthen the immune systems of those infected. Please pray for the professional health workers still needed and funds for supplies. Ask God to use this mercy outreach to bring hope to these helpless girls and women.
 

MISERICORDIA PARA LAS ‘DONCELLAS DE LOS DIOSES’ DE INDIA
Uno de los lugares más afectados por el VIH/SIDA en India es el estado de Karnataka, donde 250 mil jovencitas que vienen de familias pobres han sido dedicadas a la diosa Yellamma para la prostitución social y religiosamente avalada. Cuando se realiza el famoso peregrinaje de Yellamma cada Enero, muchas mujeres de esta parte del país son entregadas para el comercio sexual en grandes ciudades vecinas, tales como Mumbai. Estas ‘devadasis’ (‘doncellas de los dioses’) pertenecen generalmente a una Casta Determinada o son de trasfondo Dalit.

El Programa de Cuidado de Salud “El Buen Pastor” busca reducir la incidencia y la transmisión del HIV y otras enfermedades de transmisión sexual entre la población devadasi. En Abril de este año, un pequeño equipo se instaló en una de las ciudades del norte de Karnataka para proveer cuidado a la comunidad y apoyo espiritual para las víctimas. La estrategia incluyó una clínica móvil y otros campamentos médicos satélites, también proveyeron suplementos nutricionales para fortalecer el sistema inmune de las infectadas. Por favor ora por profesionales de la salud que aún se necesitan y por fondos para insumos. Pide a Dios que utilice esta campaña de misericordia para llevar esperanza a estas muchachas y mujeres indefensas.
