Northern Bridge 2009 Outreach report / Rapport de la campagne d'été 2009 d'OM France

Fourteen OMers and participants came together to help the Evangelical Baptist Churches of Bruay-la-Buissière and Auchel bring the Good News to the inhabitants of their cities. This is what they experienced and learned during the week:

Sandra, UK:
I learned just how ignorant of the gospel people are and how tragic that so many (nearly everybody) did not believe in the resurrection.

Ted, UK:
I learned once more how quickly and deeply Christians can come together in whatever circumstances.

Johannes, Germany:
It had been quite a busy day. Then we had this Theatre Night. I was on the point of either being tired or sad or happy that evening. When the others were in the church sanctuary (watching the theatre group), I was sitting with Dorit in the kitchen, just praying. Jesus touched my heart. It was as if all the stress and the pain of being away from home fell off me, because I was in God’s hands, my real home. I learned that reaching out to others doesn’t mean being strong, but instead letting God fill your weakness. It is telling other people what God has done and is doing in my life.

Dorit, Germany:
I often was frustrated because my French speaking was so bad. Sometimes I asked myself, what am I doing here? How can God use me here? But in doing mime, I could speak to people without a word. Johannes, a young man in our team, had the same problem. During the Theatre Night, we decided to pray throughout the event. That was really good and it gave me the feeling that it made sense for me to be here.

Andy, UK:
During the last 24 hours, I have felt that God is breaking my heart for the French people, like I am feeling the pain that He feels for the French people. This confirms my calling to do Christian work in France. I learned that there is a high level of witchcraft and mysticism here in France.

Sue, Canada/France:
After having tried to do surveys one day and having almost no one willing to participate, I wasn’t looking forward to trying again the next day. However, it was a much better experience and we had a couple of good conversations with people. One man, although confused in his thinking, was very interested in having further contact from the pastor. It seems that people’s initial reaction of being very negative about “religion” changes at the possibility of knowing God personally. I’m encouraged by how God uses the different team members to accomplish His work – as a team and not as individuals alone.

Simon, UK/France:
I was particularly encouraged to see the openness of people in Auchel. I have never had so many positive responses when doing questionnaires. Several folks gave their addresses to the team. On the Theatre Night, I felt a particular verse was appropriate. During the play, one of the actors was giving out Gospels (as part of the act). She gave me one and, opening it, I quickly found the verse that the Lord had prompted me to use (even though I didn’t know the reference). I subsequently used the verse whilst giving the message after the play.

Oliver, UK:
I enjoyed briefly getting to know two members of the church who had recently come to know Christ. It was encouraging to be reminded that God calls all sorts of people of different ages and from different backgrounds. I have recently been trying to become a useful tool to God and that has put pressure on me. It was good to be reminded that God calls us to worship Him by giving Him our burdens, and responding in love.

Megan, USA:
I learned that you don’t have to speak the same language to understand each other. It’s amazing how far one or two common words and hand motions go. At the Theatre Night there was a part in the play where an American came to France and handed out tracts even though she could not speak French. I hadn’t felt comfortable handing out things to people before, but that made me realise it doesn’t matter. As long as the people have the material, God will do the rest.

Katie, USA/France:
There was a Theatre Night and in the play, the French theatre team portrayed an American coming to France to share God's love. They emphasised that nearly all she could say was, “Jesus loves you” with a heavy American accent. Still, in watching the play, we saw what an impact she had on the people around her, just by passing out Gospels. And I, an American with a strong accent and limited vocabulary, was very encouraged by this.

Michael, Germany:
I went with Maryvonne, a member of the local church, to a park to distribute International Night invitations, concert flyers and other materials, as well as do surveys. We met a group of about 15-20 teenagers (with beer cans in hand). Having given out the invitations and flyers, Maryvonne invited some of them to do a survey with us. At the end of the survey, she asked me to explain the gospel to the teenagers. There were a few who listened attentively. There was one in particular who was willing to pray with us then and there. We gave away two Jesus films. In the end, all these teenagers, who were at first so mistrustful, seemed to have changed their attitude; they saluted us with their beer cans! I was surprised by the courage of this sister in Christ, but even more so in seeing the Holy Spirit touch the hearts of these young people who need Jesus so much.

Maryvonne, France:
The Lord greatly encouraged me by making Michael my teammate. Together, we were able to reach the teenagers in the public park, especially one called “Pierre” who accepted the Lord and wanted to pray at that moment, right before his friends. I loved seeing the real thirst these young people have to hear the gospel. We also met a woman who cried as we spoke to her; she also allowed us to pray for her and she realised that Jesus loves her. She was astonished that God could love her.

Serge, France:
Team life is a wonderful thing which I’d never before known. Becoming a Christian has allowed me to experience this wonderful new life, like something from another world – God’s world. I learned so much from the English pastor, Tom: things about the Bible and things about man. Tom teaches with great depth. He even answered my questions about the problems between science and God, showing me the related Scriptures. Going up to people to do surveys really helped me. It was great to be in contact with people and be confronted by their way of thinking. Their lack of faith is due to this earthly life full of idols and drugs.

Tom, UK:
Doing survey outreach in the Bruay town centre, we met some French teenagers. My French partner explained carefully to them about the forgiveness of sins in Christ. They had clearly never heard anything like it before. It was a wonderful moment when one of them asked in astonishment, “Pour moi?” (“For me?”)

Quatorze participants et équipiers d'OM se sont unis pour aider les Églises Évangéliques Baptistes de Bruay-la-Buissière et d’Auchel à apporter la bonne nouvelle aux habitants de leurs villes. Voici ce qu'ils ont vécu et appris tout au long de cette semaine :

Sandra, Royaume-Uni :
J’ai appris combien les gens ignoraient tout de l’évangile et à quel point c’était tragique qu’autant de personnes (sinon toutes) ne croient pas en la résurrection.

Ted, Royaume-Uni: J’ai appris une fois de plus comment les Chrétiens peuvent être unis rapidement et profondément quelques soient les circonstances.

Johannes, Allemagne:
C’était une journée assez chargée. Le soir, nous avions la soirée théâtre. J’étais partagé entre la fatigue, la tristesse et la joie. Pendant que les autres étaient dans la salle de culte de l’église (en train de regarder la pièce de théâtre), j’étais assise dans la cuisine avec Dorit en train de prier. Jésus a touché mon cœur. C’était comme si tout le stress et la douleur d’être loin de chez moi s’évaporaient, parce que j’étais dans les mains de Dieu, ma vraie maison.  J’ai appris que faire de l’évangélisation ne signifiait pas être fort, mais au contraire laisser Dieu combler nos faiblesses. C’est dire aux autres ce que Dieu a fait et fait encore dans ma vie.

Dorit, Allemagne :
J’étais souvent frustrée par mon français tellement mauvais. Parfois je me demandais ce que je faisais ici ? Comment Dieu pouvait il m’utiliser ? Mais par le mime, j’ai pu parler aux gens sans dire un mot. Johannes, un jeune homme de notre équipe, avait le même problème. Pendant la soirée théâtre, nous avons décidé de prier pendant tout l’évènement. C’était vraiment bien et ça m’a permis de réaliser que ma présence ici avait un sens.

Andy, Royaume-Uni :
Pendant les dernières 24 heures, j’ai ressenti que Dieu me mettait à cœur les Français, comme si je ressentais la douleur qu’Il éprouve pour le peuple français. Cela confirme mon appel à devenir un missionnaire en France. J’ai appris que la sorcellerie et le mysticisme était très courant ici en France.

Sue, Canada/France :
Un jour, après avoir essayé de faire des sondages et n’avoir trouvé presque personne désireux d’y participer, je n’étais pas pressée de retenter l’expérience le jour suivant. Pourtant, ce fut vraiment une expérience bien meilleure et nous avons pu avoir plusieurs bonnes conversations avec certains. Un homme, bien que confus dans ses pensées, était très intéressé par un entretien plus approfondi avec le pasteur. Il semble que la première réaction  négative des gens concernant "la religion", change quand ils réalisent qu’ils ont la possibilité de connaître Dieu personnellement. Je suis encouragée de voir comment Dieu utilise les différents membres de l’équipe pour accomplir Son œuvre – en tant qu’équipe et non en tant qu’individu seul.

Simon, Royaume-Uni/France :
J’ai été particulièrement encouragé par l’ouverture d’esprit des gens à Auchel. Je n’ai jamais eu autant de réponses positives en faisant des sondages. Plusieurs personnes ont donné leurs adresses à l’équipe. Pendant la soirée théâtre, j’ai ressenti qu’un verset en particulier était approprié. Pendant la pièce de théâtre, une des actrices distribuait des Évangiles (cela faisait partie de la pièce)  Elle m’en a donné un, je l’ai ouvert et j'ai rapidement trouvé le verset que le Seigneur m’avait poussé à utiliser (malgré le fait que je ne connaissais même pas sa référence). J’ai ensuite utilisé ce verset pendant le message que je donnais après la pièce de théâtre.

Oliver, Royaume-Uni :
J’ai apprécié de faire brièvement la connaissance de deux membres de l'église récemment convertis. C’était encourageant de se rappeler que Dieu appelle toutes sortes de personnes, d’âges différents et d’arrière-plans différents. Dernièrement j’ai essayé par tous mes efforts de devenir un outil utile dans les mains de Dieu et ça m’a procuré un gros stress. C’était bon d’entendre à nouveau que Dieu nous appelle à L’adorer en Lui apportant nos fardeaux et notre amour.

Megan, Etats-Unis :
J’ai appris que l’on ne doit pas forcément parler la même langue pour se comprendre. C’est étonnant tout ce que l’on peut dire avec un ou deux simples mots et des gestes. Pendant la soirée théâtre à Auchel, il y avait une partie de la pièce où une Américaine venait en France et distribuaient des tracts bien qu’elle ne puisse pas parler le français. Je ne me sentais pas très à l’aise pour faire de la distribution avant, mais cela m’a aidé à réaliser que ça n’avait pas d’importance. Tant que les personnes ont les prospectus, Dieu fait le reste.

Katie, Etats-Unis/France :
Lors de la soirée théâtre, l’équipe de théâtre française faisait le portrait d’une Américaine venant en mission en France. Ils ont souligné le fait que presque tout ce qu’elle pouvait dire était "Jésus vous aime" avec un fort accent américain. Cependant, tout au long de la pièce de théâtre, nous avons vu quel impact elle avait autour d’elle, simplement en distribuant des Evangiles. Et moi, en tant qu’Américaine avec un fort accent et un vocabulaire limité, j’ai été très encouragé par cela. 

Michael, Allemagne :
Avec Maryvonne, un membre de l’église locale, nous sommes allés dans un parc pour distribuer des invitations pour la soirée internationale et le concert, ainsi que d’autres prospectus, et faire des sondages. Nous avons rencontré un groupe de 15 à 20 ados (avec leur cannette de bière à la main). Maryvonne a invité quelques-uns à répondre au sondage. A la fin, elle m’a demandé de leur expliquer l’évangile. Certains ont bien écouté. Un en particulier a bien voulu que l’on prie avec lui. Nous leur avons offert deux films "Jésus". A la fin, tous ces jeunes (d’abord si méfiants), semblaient avoir changé d’attitude, ils nous ont salués avec leurs cannettes de bière. En fait, j’ai été surpris par le courage de cette sœur en Christ, mais encore plus de voir comment l’Esprit-Saint a touché les cœurs de ces jeunes qui ont tellement besoin de Jésus.

Maryvonne, France :
J’ai personnellement été très encouragé par le Seigneur d’avoir comme coéquipier Michaël. Ensemble, nous avons particulièrement évangélisé les jeunes ados dans les parcs publics et un jeune nommé "Kévin" a accepté le Seigneur et a voulu prier à l’instant même, devant ses autres camarades. Ce qui me réjouit c’est de voir que les jeunes ont une soif réelle d’entendre l’évangile. Une autre dame s’est mise à pleurer alors que nous lui parlions ; elle a aussi accepté que l’on prie pour elle et a réalisé que Jésus l’aime. Elle n’en revenait pas que Dieu puisse l’aimer.

Serge, France :
La vie d’équipe est une chose merveilleuse que je ne connaissais pas auparavant. En devenant chrétien, j’ai pu connaître cette nouvelle vie formidable, une vie d’un autre monde, celui de Dieu. Il n’y a eu aucun problème dans l’équipe. Tout le monde ici est formidable. Avec le pasteur anglais, Tom, j’ai appris beaucoup de choses : concernant la Bible et concernant l’être humain. Les enseignements de Tom sont très profonds. Il m’a même expliqué la solution aux oppositions entre Dieu et la science en me montrant les versets correspondants. Ça m’a vraiment aidé d’aller vers les gens pour faire des sondages. C’était chouette de pouvoir entrer en contact avec eux et d’être confronté à leur façon de penser. Leur manque de foi vient de cette vie terrestre pleine d’idoles et de drogues.

Tom, Royaume-Uni :
En faisant des sondages au centre-ville de Bruay, nous avons rencontré quelques adolescents français. Mon partenaire français leur a vraiment expliqué ce qu’était le pardon de péchés en Christ. C’est clair qu’ils n’avaient jamais rien entendu de tel auparavant. Quel instant merveilleux quand l’un d’entre eux a demandé avec étonnement, "pour moi?"
