Flowing rivers, swaying rice fields and lush forests seem to contradict that Myanmar (formerly Burma) faces huge challenges in the 21st century. Yet history-rich Myanmar is increasingly a nation of young people seeking answers and hope for the future. There’s never been a better time to share your life and hope with them! Here are several possibilities for a challenging and rewarding experience in the heart of Buddhist Asia.
I want to speak English
“My grandfather entered his hut, and brushed a lizard from his shoulder. Immediately his body tensed, and, withdrawing from the home, he left to the temple. What could this sign mean? Every Nepali child at birth has a book written about them by a Hindu priest which tells their future. Returning from the priest, my grandfather told my grandmother, “I will die in 3 months”… and he did. This is why I believe in luck.”
It’s another day in our English centre. Discussions like this from our Nepali student (an unreached people group in Myanmar,) are why we are here. We teach English, talk about worldview, and play football with students. It’s not just language acquisition; it’s relationships. Our English centre has about 120 students – who will listen to them? Come and see what adventure God has for you.
Bible studies
“Your God must be the true God; I’ve been praying to Him every day and I’ve had two Bibles given to me by different people” – this from one of several Buddhist monks we meet with to talk about Christianity and Buddhism. He wants to know the truth. Others just want something to hope in. There’s no better way to hone your own faith than by inviting others to explore it with you!
Orphanages/Kid’s Work
I look at the packed room of 250 kids from a slum area. In orphanages, we see children abandoned by their parents and families, whom God has put into our lives so that we can love and share life with them. Two years ago, they knew little or nothing of God, yet now we help not only their educational needs but also their great spiritual need. What this community will look like in five years, we can only imagine!
Kindergartens
“Little baby Jesus, sleeping on the hay!” A three-year-old sits on the floor with his friends. There is a great need for more workers with lots of energy, and a fun and compassionate heart. This ministry lays a foundation for young minds and opens door into their families, which can be transformational in the culture. You could join us to reach many more.
Administration
Are you gifted in accounting, finance, or other behind-the-scenes skills? With continuing relief work and liaising with other OM fields, our ‘public’ ministry is constrained by necessary administrative work. Your training and willingness to strengthen our teams is strategic and most welcome!
We’re looking for ordinary people who are ready for unique, hands-on training in transforming lives and communities. Mingalaba! (welcome!)
