Dear partners in prayer,

Greetings in our Lord Jesus from Heathrow airport where I am en route to a Middle East country to speak at a retreat. A senior leader in this field was refused entry last week after over 30 years of service there. Here are two other major challenges we have been facing in recent days:

• The ministry of Doulos, the world’s oldest ocean-going passenger ship, now 95 years old, will come to an end on 31 December. Repairs needed to continue sailing would cost over € 10 million and take five months to complete—an unfeasible investment for a limited ministry future.

CEO Peter Nicoll stated, “We recognise God’s faithfulness in 32 years of service with more than 600 port visits in over 100 countries. We are deeply grateful to partners around the world who have supported the ship ministry. Please pray with us as we work on present challenges and seek the Lord for the future.”

With Logos Hope now active and exciting ministry taking place, we are investigating options to charter another ship in the interim and have already begun working on the Doulos replacement project. Contributions should be given through your local OM office and designated ‘Doulos Project’.

• Leading Christian book and Bible charity IBS-STL UK has recently faced a succession of financial problems, which have caused significant cash flow pressures, excess stock, and supply chain and service difficulties in its distribution and retail units, culminating in the decision to exit the business.

IBS-STL UK was founded in 1962 as part of OM, but amicably separated in 1989 and is now part of Biblica, a global Bible translation, publishing, distribution and outreach ministry serving more than 100 countries with books, Bibles and other Christian resources. The sale of the UK operations will not impact Biblica’s other global operations and donor funds supporting Biblica’s worldwide outreach ministries will not be affected.

All of this led me to call for a day of prayer and fasting around the OM world, so that we can together wait upon the Lord, asking how He would want us to respond to these developments. We would also appreciate your prayers and, if you sense God speaking as you wait upon Him, please be in touch with me.

As we go towards the end of 2009, we have so much to thank God for. We expected a really tough year financially and although there have been challenges, we have seen God’s provision in many wonderful ways. Many of you have been part of that through your giving as well as your prayer, and we are truly grateful.

It’s also been a good year for people joining our ministries around the world as the Lord of the Harvest has continued to thrust out labourers. We have seen real progress in many places with particular encouragement in India and parts of the Muslim World. So, along with the challenges, there is cause for a huge ‘thank you’ to God and to you for your support and prayers. We look forward to continued fellowship with you in 2010. Let me now give you some highlights of the ministry in the last month.

Emerging Mission Movements

Angola: In 2005, Joan started a children’s club in Menongue. God has raised up teenagers who were part of the children’s club to minister to the children. Please pray for Mimosa, Jó, Julia, Joana, Paz, and Siloé e Di Te to be courageous in this work.

A congregation in Windhoek, Namibia recently brought 500 Portuguese Bibles to the OM base. In a week’s time 80 Bibles were sold! Bible study materials are being translated into the Kangela language. Please pray for Joan and Chahingaas as they work on this. Pappa Kafunna and Mamma Maria, an elderly couple, are being trained as cell group leaders. Pappa Menezes, another older man, is also being trained in this work.

Taiwan: Joseph Ting has taken over from Zinnie Wong as Country Leader from 1 November. From Sarawak, East Malaysia, Joseph previously served on Doulos and in Malaysia. He and Janice have two young children. We want to express deep appreciation to Zinnie for faithful and diligent service in the past 4–5 years. She will take a much-needed break before considering her next field of service. Kindly remember both of them in prayer during this time of transition.

Swaziland: One Dutch OMer shares her experience, “As I was preparing to leave the country, the OM Bookshop Manager said, ‘I have a large amount of New Testaments in SiSwati. Please take them with you to distribute to whoever is interested.’ I found myself on a bus with 800 New Testaments but no plan how to distribute them. People from Mbekelweni walked some kilometres to ask for a copy. In one school, at least 500 students wanted a New Testament. No plan was needed to distribute them. God brought the people to us and we were encouraged to see the happiness on their faces.” Praise God that so many are receiving the Word of God in Africa. Please pray for OM’s ministry in Africa, and that more will have a chance to hear about Him. 


Guatemala: Pilar Castro says, “We have seen God’s provision and care in every challenge that we had this year. During the 28 November–5 December outreach, Make Your Mark, we are going to reach out to those affected by famine. We will work with six pastors and indigenous peoples in Huehuetenango.

“Pastors need many to assist them in evangelism. We were asked to take food aid, since many have lost crops and have nothing to eat. If God puts it on your heart to send an offering we can buy beans, corn, oil, etc. to distribute during the outreach in El Pacate, La Cal, Cumbre de Culque, Palmiche and Suculque.”

Europe

Austria: Muslims have increased fifteen-fold since 1971; Turks, Serbs, Bosnians, North Africans and other nationalities now make up nearly half a million of the country’s eight million-plus population. Austria is unique in Western Europe in granting Muslims the status of a recognized religious community—the second largest faith in Austria, where less than half of one percent would claim to be born-again Christians.

A mosque has been established in army barracks in Vienna (the first in Europe), providing Muslim imams for soldiers. Muslim recruits may also refuse to salute the Austrian flag. A survey of Islamic teachers published in a leading newspaper, Die Presse, was revealing: 14.7% opposed the Austrian constitution; 21.9% opposed democracy since it was incompatible with Islam; 28.4% said it was not possible to be a Muslim and a European.

In some areas, 90% of children in local schools have immigrant parents. In 2007, OM found a church in Linz interested in reaching out to foreigners. A coffee house was opened in a neighbourhood where all but three of 460 people in surrounding flats are immigrants. Children aged 6–12 are welcomed three afternoons a week for sports, games, crafts, and homework help. Turkish women enjoy a weekly gathering and, with the aid of a social worker, German language lessons are offered. Four area churches now send part-time volunteers to work with OMers. When staffing is sufficient, the programme will be extended to serve older youth and, eventually, men.

OM’s Field Leader is enthusiastic. “We shouldn’t wait until we have a Muslim-dominated society to share the gospel; we should do it now. I’m excited that we have a growing immigrant/Muslim outreach. But,” he adds, “the key is to involve the church so they own the ministry, not OM.”

Albania: A team from Florida (USA) came to bring Good News to the people of Lushnje. Their week included visits to a local village called Dushk, doing house visits to talk to people about Jesus and invite them to a special service the following Friday.

Splitting into groups of three or four with a translator, they headed out, not knowing what to expect. One group entered an Albanian family’s home, was greeted warmly, then continued inside to the living room area. A neighbour came in unexpectedly, stating several times that she was Muslim and not interested in hearing what the group was sharing. The group waited for Friday to see if the family would come; to their surprise, the distracting neighbour came instead!

The team prepared a drama of God creating mankind, with Satan coming to distract man from God and severing the relationship. At the end, Jesus came to save mankind. The neighbour said the drama had impacted her, that she had understood what it meant, and that she would like to hear more about Jesus! Jim reports: “The Albanian host church working with these teams had only 30 believers before, but now 10–15 new believers faithfully attend worship regularly! Local Christians have been encouraged to know that God works in many different ways, transcending even our own culture. We’ve all been reminded not to limit God, but to be sensitive to the moving of His Spirit.”

Slovakia: Officially, 120 Roma live in a ghetto outside Levice, Slovakia (unofficially 500). Miesto v Dome (Space in the house) reaches out to the socially deprived. Pastor Miro shared about so far unsuccessful efforts in integrating the homeless and Roma into his Slovak church. Maria is a ‘white’, mentally handicapped, elderly Slovak who lives on the street and spends her nights at the home of ‘darks’—a Roma ghetto family that demands all her social benefits for the right to sleep in one of two rooms that 20 people share.

Pray for financial and other resources for the Miesto v Dome ministry. Please pray for the church to become more accepting towards socially-deprived people. Pray for the government and the Roma community in Ladislavov dvor.

In addition to literature, OM EAST is developing web-based projects and migrating print books into digital format. Recent discussions with partnering Christian publishers at the Frankfurt Book Fair were encouraging and positive. Copyright issues and security need further research. Pray for wisdom, technical knowledge and support and good cooperation with partners in developing our media department.

India

Associate International Coordinator Joseph D’souza comments on recent developments:
Kancha Ilaiah’s book Post-Hindu India was officially released at a public ceremony on 25 November in New Delhi. The book, dedicated to the God who makes all human beings in his own image,
is jointly launched by Sage (the publisher) and Dalit Freedom Network. This important book is bound to be controversial and is expected to trigger more debate on the Dalit/caste issue. Opposition from extremists is likely.
Kancha’s thesis is that caste-based Hinduism cannot survive and is in decline. Therefore, the Indian masses will continue to move to one of three major faiths: Christianity, Islam or Buddhism. Kancha’s positive leaning towards Christianity will lead to accusations that he has become the stooge of the Christian Church. 
Please pray for God’s grace, wisdom and protection in the midst of the massive changes going on in Indian society.

Relief and development

Operation Mercy: The founder and director of this partner organisation, Bertil Engqvist, handed over leadership on 5 September to Scott Breslin. Scott (USA) and his Swedish wife, Katarina, have worked in Turkey for 22 years. Scott has a special passion for working with leadership training, mentoring and building stable and competent teams.

Bertil and his wife Gunnel have spent the last 18 years building up a development organisation that has changed the lives of many needy people, mainly in Arabic-, Persian- and Turkish-speaking areas. Since its founding in 1991, among Kurdish refugees in Northern Iraq, Operation Mercy has grown into a recognized disaster relief and development organisation with long-term work in ten countries. Its workers run a number of projects relieving the suffering of the forgotten poor in areas such as healthcare, micro-finance, infrastructure and education. Operation Mercy has always worked at a grassroots level with projects that are locally initiated. www.mercy.se

Pioneering initiatives

Pakistan: Asia Challenge Teams leadership are discussing the way forward in light of current developments, including gaps in the leadership itself. With the global recession, many team members have struggled to obtain sufficient personal support. We trust that God would raise up supporters with a vision to partner with ACT, and enable those who come from poorer countries to participate.

One team leader teaches in four different locations: two churches, an academy with 20 students, and one class in a Bible Institute. Approximately 70 young men and women attend the discipleship programme. The team takes services each week, preaching, teaching and challenging people to be involved with the majority faith people, making friends and sharing their lives. One man in particular needs to allow his heart to soften and become receptive. His extensive knowledge of the Word is quite amazing, yet he himself said the other day, “I am still blind and deaf.”

World faiths

International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned of legislation that provides international cover for domestic anti-blasphemy laws in countries like Pakistan and Sudan, where such laws are used to persecute Christians under the guise of protecting Islam from defamation. ICC has joined over 100 NGOs from over 20 countries in signing a Common Statement protesting the resolution.

ICC’s Advocacy Officer, Jeremy Shull, said: “This is the first time a binding effort is being made in an organisation with the international influence of the UN. We are dismayed at this movement in the UN to infringe upon religious freedom. Human rights laws exist to protect individuals, not countries or ideas. Now is the time to stop any movement toward creating a binding form of legislation that limits religious expression.” (ASSIST News Service) www.persecution.org

Turkey: A team member in Ankara reports, “Recently, an old man sitting in a chair surrounded by a few women began telling us about the superiority of the Quran. My friend had an idea: let him tell us about Jesus from the Quran. The people listened intently as we were told that Jesus was born a miraculous virgin birth, performed miracles and was taken up to heaven alive. Jesus did not marry nor fight in any wars. Jesus was also the Word of God and the Spirit of God.

We offered to pray for the old man’s swollen legs. He and the ladies around him gladly accepted, as they had just heard some of the great news about Jesus from their Muslim neighbour. Pray that Quran-reading Muslims would become enamoured with Jesus and decide to read the New Testament."

Azerbaijan: Sabina held the ‘Holy Book’ and gave thanks for the first completed edition of both the Old and New Testaments. Many believers, about twelve years old in their faith, are grateful that the whole Bible is available in their heart language through the prayers and financial support of God’s people.

3,500 copies of the Azerbaijani Bible were published abroad in 2009 (half in the older, Cyrillic script and half in the newer, Latin script). The Bibles arrived in June and were released a month later. Almost immediately they were snapped up. With such a great demand for the Latin script Bible, more will be published as soon as there are funds. This will greatly benefit the younger generation of Azeri believers who prefer the newer Latin script. Praise God for the whole Bible in modern Azerbaijani.
Pray that it will be used for the growth of the church in depth and number. 
Pray for funds for reprinting.

Afghanistan: One OM ministry broadcasts radio programmes, made by national believers living outside the country, which take the Gospel into Afghan homes. Here are some quotes and stories of listeners:

“I want my children to know this way that offers hope. I want to share with them what you have taught me and what I have read in the Bible you sent me. Do not think that these recent difficulties have weakened my faith. Just the opposite—now my faith is stronger! Even more, I want my friends and family to know this Truth I have found.”

One man has been listening to our programs for about three years with his family of eight. “We believe in the message you are teaching. Thank you for teaching my whole family.”

Praise God for the responses to the radio broadcasts, for the homes and families being reached, especially in remote areas. Pray for entire families to be transformed by the Gospel, so that extended families can gradually become new communities of faith.

Think again: “Love one another”

If God calls us to love one another—and even our enemies—then pain is inevitable. When I love, I make myself vulnerable. I cannot hide behind methods or tasks or busyness. I am called to step out of my comfort zone, to offer nothing but my vulnerable self. And that, sometimes, can be incredibly painful.

I live in a world at war, a world that tells me that I have to be tough in order to survive. I have to face people—some of them brothers and sisters in Christ—that slap me in the face. And, I have to admit, I am like them.

Why should I want to love, when I get nothing in return…or if what I get is not what I want? Why want to be vulnerable? Being soft and open is going to break your heart, time and time again. I hear people say “Keep your eyes on Jesus”, the implication being “…and everything will be fine.” But what do I see when I look at Jesus?

Cross-eyed

He, with the closest relationship with the Father, didn’t seem to be in a very safe place. Obedience didn’t come automatically. Everything within Him cries out in Gethsemane: “Father: is there no other way out? I don’t want to die! Why does radical obedience to your way lead me to the cross? Why do I have to go through this total agony of being abandoned even by You…especially by You?”

He wrestled through the night in deep loneliness and despair, with no one to comfort and support Him. In darkness His will became one with the Father’s. But pain was still pain and the cross was still the cross. Even there, the Son who received everything from His Father’s hands offered it to Him in return.

What kind of love is this? What kind of Father is this, that Jesus was ready to give up everything? There must be something incomprehensible to gain, something impossible to resist. Even death itself surrendered to this love between Jesus and His Father which flowed between them by the Holy Spirit.

This same Spirit is living in those who believe—including me! Jesus says: “Dance with me“—not in a fancy ballroom, but in a broken world. His eyes shine. I see warmth, acceptance, courage, strength and compassion. Pain did not make Him hard and bitter, but soft and compassionate. With Him, I feel safe. I almost forget about myself, and yet, I’m more myself than ever before.

I love you, Jesus: with my broken heart, my wounds and failures, my talents and abilities, with all that I am. You don’t first ‚fix’ me, but welcome me as I am and that is what changes me. I want You to have all of me!

INFORME INTERNACIONAL DICIEMBRE 2009

Queridos compañeros de oración:

Saludos en el nombre del Señor Jesús desde el aeropuerto de Heathrow desde donde estoy por viajar a un país de Medio Oriente para predicar en un retiro. A un antiguo líder de este campo se le negó la entrada la semana pasada después de 30 años de servicio allí. Aquí siguen dos grandes desafíos que hemos enfrentado en los últimos días:

• El ministerio del Doulos, el barco de pasajeros más antiguo del mundo, con 95 años, terminará el 31 de Diciembre. Las reparaciones que se necesitan para que continúe navegando costarán más de 10 millones de Euros y tomará cinco meses realizarlas, una inversión inverosímil para un ministerio limitado en el futuro.

Peter Nicoll, Director General de los barcos, comentó: “Reconocemos la fidelidad de Dios en los 32 años de servicio con más de 600 puertos visitados en más de 100 países. Estamos profundamente agradecidos a nuestros compañeros alrededor del mundo quienes han apoyado al ministerio del barco. Por favor oren con nosotros mientras enfrentamos estos desafíos y buscamos la dirección del Señor para el futuro.”

Con el Logos Hope activo y con un ministerio floreciente, estamos investigando opciones para alquilar un barco en forma interina y ya comenzamos a trabajar en el proyecto para reemplazar el Doulos. Las contribuciones deben ser enviadas a través de la oficina local de OM y descritas como ‘Proyecto Doulos’.

• La organización benéfica cristiana líder en producción y distribución de libros y Biblias IBS-STL Reino Unido ha enfrentado una sucesión de problemas financieros causando presiones en el flujo de caja, exceso de stock, y dificultades en la cadena de distribución y las tiendas minoristas, lo que llevó a tomar la decisión de dejar el negocio.

IBS-STL fue fundada en 1962 como parte de OM, pero se separó amistosamente en 1989 y ahora es parte de Biblica, un ministerio bíblico global de traducción, publicación y distribución que sirve en más de 100 países con libros, Biblias y otros recursos cristianos. La venta de las operaciones en el Reino Unido no impactará en las operaciones de Bíblica en otros lugares, ni se afectarán los fondos donados para apoyar los ministerios de Biblica alrededor del mundo.

Todo esto me lleva a llamar a un día de ayuno y oración alrededor del mundo de OM, para que juntos esperemos en el Señor, preguntándoles cuál debería ser nuestra respuesta ante estas situaciones. Apreciaremos tus oraciones y, si sientes que Dios te habla mientras esperas en Él, por favor comunícate conmigo.

Al acercarnos al final de 2009, tenemos mucho para agradecer a Dios. Esperábamos un año financiero muy difícil y, aunque hubo algunos desafíos, pudimos ver la provisión de Dios en muchas maneras maravillosas. Muchos de ustedes han sido parte de esto a través de sus donaciones y sus oraciones, así que estamos verdaderamente agradecidos.

También ha sido un buen año para quienes se unieron a nuestro ministerio alrededor del mundo, puesto que el Señor de la Cosecha ha continuado enviando obreros. Hemos visto progresos reales en muchos lugares en especial en India y partes del Mundo Musulmán. Así que, junto con los desafíos, hay un gran “gracias” a Dios y a ti por el apoyo y las oraciones. Esperamos continuar la fraternidad contigo durante 2010. Ahora permíteme darte algunas novedades del ministerio durante el mes pasado.

Movimientos Misioneros Emergentes

Angola: En 2005, Joan comenzó un club de niños en Menongue. Dios ha levantado adolescentes que eran parte de ese club para ministrar a otros niños. Por favor ora por Minosa, Jó, Julia, Joana, Paz, y Siloé e Di Te para que sean valientes en este trabajo.

Una congregación de Widhoek, Namibia recientemente llevó 500 Biblias en portugués a la base de OM. ¡En una semana se vendieron 80 Biblias! Materiales de estudio bíblico se están traduciendo al idioma kangela. Por favor ora por Joan y Chahingaas que están trabajando en esto. Pappa Kafunna y Mamma Maria, un matrimonio de ancianos, están siendo entrenados como líderes de grupo celular. Pappa Menezes, otro anciano, también está siendo entrenado en este sentido.

Taiwán: El 1 de Noviembre, Joseph Ting ha tomado el cargo de Líder de País, ocupado antes por Zinnie Wong. Originario de Sarawak, este de Malasia, Joseph sirvió anteriormente en el Doulos y en Malasia. Él y Janice tienen dos hijos. Queremos expresar nuestra profunda apreciación a Zinnie por su fiel y dirigente servicio en los últimos cuatro o cinco años. Ella tomará un muy necesitado descanso antes de considerar en qué campo seguirá sirviendo. Recuerda amablemente a ambos en tus oraciones durante este tiempo de transición.

Swazilandia: Un OMero holandés compartió así su experiencia: “Cuando me estaba preparando para salir del país, el Gerente de la librería de OM me dijo: ‘Tengo una gran cantidad de Nuevos Testamentos en suazi. Por favor tómalos y entrégalos a quienes estén interesados.’ Me encontraba con 800 Nuevos Testamentos en el autobús sin ningún plan de distribución. Gente de Mbekelweni caminó varios kilómetros para pedir un NT. En una escuela, por lo menos 500 estudiantes querían una copia. No se necesitó ningún plan para distribuirlos. Dios trajo las personas hacia nosotros y nos animó mucho ver los rostros felices.” Alaba a Dios por tantos que reciben la Palabra de Dios en África. Por favor ora por el ministerio de OM en África, para que muchos tengan la oportunidad de escuchar de Él.

Guatemala: Pilar Castro comentó que, “hemos visto la provisión de Dios y su cuidado en cada desafío que enfrentamos este año. Desde el 28 de Noviembre al 5 de Diciembre tenemos el programa Deja Tu Marca, en el cual alcanzaremos a los afectados por la sequía y la hambruna. Estaremos trabajando con seis pastores y con pueblos indígenas en Huehuetenango.

“Los pastores necesitan a muchos que les ayuden en evangelismo. Se nos pidió que llevemos alimentos, porque se han perdido las cosechas y no tienen qué comer. Si Dios pone esta carga en tu corazón, envía una ofrenda para que compremos porotos (frijoles), maíz, aceite, etc. para ser distribuidos en El Pacate, La Cal, Cumbre de Culque, Palmiche y Suculque.”

Europa

Austria: La población musulmana ha crecido 15 veces desde 1971. Turcos, serbios, bosnios, norteafricanos y otras nacionalidades ya suman cerca de medio millón en un país con poco más de ocho millones de habitantes. Austria es el único país en Europa Occidental en otorgarles a los musulmanes el estatus de comunidad religiosa reconocida, la segunda religión más grande de Austria, donde menos de 0,5 por ciento se reconoce como cristiano nacido de nuevo.

Se ha establecido una mezquita en barracas del ejército en Viena (la primera en Europa), que les provee imanes musulmanes a los soldados. Los reclutas musulmanes pueden negarse a saludar la bandera austríaca. Un estudio sobre profesores islámicos publicado en el periódico Die Presse, revela que el 14,7% se opone a la constitución austríaca; el 21,9% se opone a la democracia por ser incompatible con el Islam; el 28,4% dice que no se puede ser musulmán y europeo.

En algunas regiones, el 90% de los niños en las escuelas tienen padres inmigrantes. En 2007, OM encontró una iglesia en Linz interesada en alcanzar a los extranjeros. Se abrió un café en un vecindario donde sólo tres de las 460 personas que viven en los departamentos aledaños no son inmigrantes. Las mujeres turcas se reúnen una vez a la semana y, con la ayuda de una trabajadora social, toman clases de alemán. Cuatro iglesias vecinas ahora envían voluntarios para trabajar con OM. Cuando haya suficiente personal, habrá programas para jóvenes mayores y finalmente para hombres adultos.

El Líder de Campo de OM es entusiasta al expresar que, “no debemos esperar hasta que tengamos una sociedad dominada por los musulmanes para compartir el evangelio. Debemos hacerlo ahora. Estoy entusiasmado por tener un creciente programa hacia los inmigrantes musulmanes. Pero”, agregó. “la clave es involucrar a la iglesia para que sean ellos los dueños del ministerio, no OM”.

Albania: Un equipo de Florida (EE.UU.) vino para llevar las Buenas Nuevas a las personas de Lushnje. Estuvieron una semana donde visitaron una aldea local llamada Dushk, conversando con las personas casa por casa acerca de Jesús e invitándolos a una reunión especial a realizarse el Viernes de esa semana.

Fueron divididos en grupos de tres o cuatro con un traductor y salieron sin saber qué esperar. Un grupo fue invitado a entrar en el hogar de una familia albanesa, los recibieron calurosamente y pasaron a la sala. Una vecina llegó inesperadamente y repitió varias veces que era musulmana y no estaba interesada en oír lo que el grupo tenía para compartir. El grupo esperaba ver si la familia llegaría a la reunión del Viernes, pero, para su sorpresa, ¡quien vino fue la vecina!

El equipo preparó un drama donde Dios crea la raza humana, donde Satanás llega para quitar la atención del hombre hacia Dios y rompe esta relación. Al final, Jesús llega a salvar a la humanidad. Aquella vecina dijo que el drama la había impactado, que había entendido lo que significa, que le gustaría saber algo más acerca de Jesús. Jim comentó: “La iglesia albanesa anfitriona que trabajó con este equipo tiene solamente 30 miembros, pero ahora 10 a 15 creyentes asisten fielmente a las reuniones. Los cristianos locales se han animado al ver que Dios obra en muchas maneras diferentes, trascendiendo aún su propia cultura. Se nos repitió que no limitemos a Dios, sino seamos sensibles al mover de Su Espíritu.”

Eslovaquia: Oficialmente, 120 romaníes viven en un gueto a las afueras de Levice, Eslovaquia (informes no oficiales hablan de 500). Miesto v Dome (Espacio en la casa) alcanza a los marginados sociales. El pastor Miro compartió acerca de los infructuosos esfuerzos para integrar a los sin hogar y los romaníes a la iglesia eslovaca. María es una ‘blanca’, discapacitada mental, anciana eslovaca que vive en las calles y sus noches en el hogar de los ‘oscuros’ (un gueto familiar que le exige todos sus beneficios sociales por el derecho de dormir en una de sus dos habitaciones que comparte con otras 20 personas.

Ora por las finanzas y otros recursos para el ministerio Miesto v Dome. Por favor ora para que la iglesia se vuelva más permeable para los marginados sociales. Ora por el gobierno y la comunidad romaní en Ladislavov dvor.

Además de la distribución de literatura, OM EAST está desarrollando proyectos basados en la Web y digitalizando libros impresos. Recientes conversaciones con publicadores cristianos en la Feria del Libro en Frankfurt fueron positivas. Asuntos de Copyright y seguridad necesitan investigación más profunda. Ora por sabiduría, conocimiento tecnológico y apoyo y buena cooperación con los que hacen posible el desarrollo de nuestro departamento multimedia.

India

Joseph D’souza es el Coordinador Internacional Asociado de OM y comentó lo siguiente acerca de los últimos desarrollos: El libro Post-Hindu India [India Post-Hindú] de Kancha Ilaiah fue presentado oficialmente en una ceremonia pública el 25 de Noviembre en Nueva Delhi. Este libro, dedicado al Dios que hace a todos los seres humanos a su propia imagen, fue publicado en conjunto por Sage (la editorial) y la Red de Liberación Dalit. Es un libro que llama a la controversia y se espera que dispare más debates acerca del caso Dalit/castas. Se espera la oposición de los extremistas. La tesis de Kancha es que el hinduismo basado en castas no puede sobrevivir y está declinando. Por lo tanto, las masas indias continuarán migrando hacia las otras tres religiones mayoritarias: el cristianismo, el Islam y el budismo. El conocimiento que ha desarrollado Kancha acerca del cristianismo puede llevar a acusaciones de que se ha convertido en una “marioneta” de la iglesia cristiana. Por favor ora para que la gracia, la sabiduría y la protección de Dios se manifiesten en medio de los cambios masivos que se están desarrollando en la sociedad india.

Ayuda y desarrollo

Operación Misericordia: El fundador y director de esta organización asociada a OM, Bertil Engqvist, le dejó el liderazgo de la misma a Schott Breslin el pasado 5 de Septiembre. Scott (EE.UU.) y su esposa sueca, Katarina, han trabajado en Turquía por 22 años. Scott tiene una pasión especial para trabajar en entrenamiento del liderazgo, mentoreo y la formación de equipos estables y competentes.

Bertil y su esposa Gunnel han pasado 18 años construyendo una organización de ayuda y desarrollo que ha cambiado las vidas de muchas personas necesitadas principalmente en regiones de habla árabe, persa y turca. Desde su fundación en 1991, entre los refugiados kurdos en el norte de Irak, Operación Misericordia ha crecido hasta convertirse en una organización reconocida en el área de desarrollo y respuesta a desastres que tiene trabajo a largo plazo en diez países. Sus obreros llevan a cabo muchos proyectos que alivian el sufrimiento en áreas como el cuidado de la salud, micro-emprendimientos, infraestructura y educación. Operación Misericordia ha trabajado siempre con un perfil muy bajo con proyectos iniciados localmente. www.mercy.se

Iniciativas Pioneras

Pakistán: El liderazgo de los Equipos de Desafío Asia está analizando cómo seguir adelante, a la luz de los presentes acontecimientos. Con la recesión global, muchos de los miembros de los equipos están teniendo problemas para tener suficiente apoyo financiero. Confiamos en que Dios levantará personas que quieran apoyar los Equipos de Desafío Asia y de esta manera permitir que participantes de países más pobres puedan venir.

Un líder de equipo enseña en cuatro lugares diferentes: dos iglesias, una academia con veinte estudiantes, y una clase en un Instituto Bíblico. Aproximadamente 70 jóvenes, hombres y mujeres asisten a los programas de discipulado. El equipo está a cargo de reuniones semanales, enseñando, predicando y desafiando a los creyentes a alcanzar a las personas de la religión mayoritaria, haciendo amigos y compartiendo sus vidas. Un hombre en particular necesita ablandar su corazón y ser más receptivo. Su conocimiento extenso de la Palabra es muy sorprendente, pero aún así, confesó hace poco: “todavía estoy ciego y sordo”.

Creencias Mundiales:

International Christian Concern (ICC) [Preocupación Cristiana Internacional] ha tomado conocimiento de legislación que le provee cobertura internacional a las leyes anti-blasfemia en países como Pakistán y Sudán, donde estas leyes son utilizadas para perseguir a los cristianos bajo la aparente protección del Islam contra su difamación. ICC ha unido más de 100 ONG de más de 20 países para firmar una Declaración Común protestando contra esta resolución.

El funcionario de ICC, Jeremy Shull, dijo que, “es la primera vez que se realiza un esfuerzo vinculante en una organización con la influencia internacional de las Naciones Unidas. Nos aflige este movimiento de la ONU que inflinge la libertad religiosa. Las leyes sobre derechos humanos existen para proteger individuos, no países e ideas. Ahora es tiempo de detener todo movimiento que cree un vínculo con los límites a las expresiones religiosas.” (ASSIST News Service) www.persecution.org

Turquía: Un miembro del equipo en Ankara informó que, “Recientemente un anciano sentado en una silla y rodeado de mujeres comenzó a hablar sobre la superioridad del Corán. Mi amigo tuvo una idea: le pidamos que nos hable de lo que el Corán dice de Jesús. Los que estaban allí escucharon atentamente que Jesús nació milagrosamente de la virgen, hizo milagros y fue llevado vivo al cielo. Jesús no se casó ni peleó en ninguna guerra. Jesús fue también la Palabra de Dios y el Espíritu de Dios.

“Ofrecimos orar por la hinchazón de la pierna del anciano. Tanto él como las damas a su alrededor accedieron gustosamente, puesto que habían escuchado grandes noticias de Jesús contadas por su vecino musulmán. Ora para que los musulmanes que lean el Corán se enamoren de Jesús y decidan leer el Nuevo Testamento.”

Azerbaiján: Sabina levantó el “Libro Sagrado” y dio gracias por la primera edición completa del Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento. Muchos creyentes, con alrededor de doce años en la fe, están muy agradecidos de tener la Biblia completa en el idioma de su corazón y está disponible por las oraciones y el apoyo del pueblo de Dios.

3500 copias de la Biblia en azerí fueron publicadas en el exterior en 2009 (la mitad en el alfabeto cirílico arcaico y la otra mitad en el alfabeto latino). Las biblias llegaron en Junio y se distribuyeron un mes más tarde. Se agotaron casi inmediatamente. Con tal demanda de la Biblia en alfabeto latino, se publicarán más tan pronto como lleguen los fondos. Esto beneficiará a la nueva generación de creyentes azeríes quienes prefieren el alfabeto latino. Alaba a Dios por poder tener la Biblia completa en azerí. Ora para que sea utilizada para el crecimiento de la iglesia en profundidad y en números. Ora por los fondos para la reimpresión.

Afganistán: Un programa de radio de OM realizado por creyentes nacionales desde fuera del país, lleva el Evangelio a los hogares afganos. Aquí hay algunas historias de los oyentes:

“Quiero que mis hijos conozcan este camino que ofrece esperanza. Quiero compartir con ellos lo que ustedes me han enseñado y lo que he leído en la Biblia que ustedes me enviaron. No piensen que las recientes dificultades han debilitado mi fe. Ha ocurrido lo opuesto, ¡ahora mi fe es más fuerte! Aún más, quiero que mis amigos y mi familia conozcan la Verdad que he encontrado.”

Un hombre que ha escuchado nuestros programas por tres años con su familia de ocho personas, compartió que, “creemos en el mensaje que ustedes enseñan. Gracias por enseñar a toda mi familia.”

Alaba a Dios por las respuestas a las transmisiones radiales, por los hogares y familias alcanzadas, especialmente en áreas remotas. Ora para que familias enteras sean transformadas por el Evangelio, para que las familias extendidas puedan convertirse gradualmente en nuevas comunidades de la fe.

Pensemos otra vez: “Ámense unos a otros”

Si Dios nos pide que nos amemos unos a otros, y aún a nuestros enemigos, entonces el dolor es inevitable. Cuando amo, me hago vulnerable. No me puedo esconder detrás de métodos, tareas o negocios. Soy llamado a dejar mi zona confortable, y no ofrecer otra cosa que mi vulnerable ser. Y eso a veces puede ser increíblemente doloroso.

Vivo en un mundo en guerra, un mundo que me dice que tengo que ser duro para sobrevivir. Tengo que enfrentar a personas, a veces hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, que me abofetean. Y, tengo que admitir, soy igual que ellos.

¿Por qué tengo que querer amar si no recibo nada a cambio… o si lo que recibo no es lo que quiero? ¿Por qué querer ser vulnerable? Ser dulce y abierto te romperá el corazón, una y otra vez. He escuchado a las personas decir: “Mantén tus ojos en Jesús”, y la consecuencia será “… y todo estará bien”. Pero, ¿qué veo cuando miro a Jesús?

Ojos bizcos

Él, con la relación más cercana al Padre, no parecía estar en un lugar muy seguro. La obediencia no llega automáticamente. Todo dentro de Él gritó en Getsemaní: “Padre: ¿hay alguna otra forma? ¡No quiero morir! ¿Por qué la obediencia radical a tu camino me lleva a la cruz? ¿Por qué tengo que pasar por esta agonía total de ser abandonado incluso por Ti… especialmente por Ti?”

Él lucho esa noche en profunda soledad y desesperación, sin nadie que lo conforte y apoye. En la oscuridad Su voluntad fue una con la del Padre. Pero el dolor seguía siendo dolor y la cruz seguía siendo la cruz. Aún ahí, el Hijo que recibió todo de las manos de Su Padre, se lo devolvió a Él.

¿Qué clase de amor es este? ¿Qué clase de Padre es este, que Jesús estuvo dispuesto a abandonar todo? Debe haber algo incomprensible que se ganará, algo imposible de resistir. Aún la muerte se rindió ante este amor entre Jesús y Su Padre que fluyó entre ellos por el Espíritu Santo.

Este mismo Espíritu vive en aquellos que creen, ¡incluso en mí! Jesús dijo: “Danza conmigo”, no en un extravagante salón de baile, sino en un mundo quebrantado. Sus ojos brillan. Veo calor, aceptación, ánimo, fuerza y compasión. El dolor no lo hizo duro y amargado, sino amable y compasivo. Con Él me siento segura. Casi me olvido de mí misma, y aún así, soy más yo misma que nunca antes.

Te amo Jesús: con mi corazón quebrantado, mis heridas y fracasos, mis talentos y habilidades, con todo lo que soy. No me restauraste primero, sino que me diste la bienvenida como soy y eso es lo que me cambio. ¡Quiero que tengas todo de mí!
