Teenstreet leaves lasting impact

2060 teenagers converged this week in Oldenburg, Germany, for TeenStreet, OM's international youth conference. Celebrating its 18th birthday in Europe, TeenStreet reached "adulthood" this year - but it's obvious that the event connects with teens as strongly as ever.

There is an amazing diversity to every aspect of TeenStreet. Teens represent 19 countries, and translators put live sessions into their own words via headsets. Workshops utilise a wide variety of interests, demonstrating how cooking, graffiti art, martial arts, chess, choir, fashion, or filmmaking can all be acts of worship. Teens met in groups of six along with one leader, and together they discuss what they are learning or struggling with.

This year's theme, "PS XXIII," drew from the life of David. Worship, workshops, quiet time, and small group activities focused on God's sufficiency - on how David was able to say in Psalm 23, "I shall not want." During the opening worship session, leaders distributed scraps of paper with portions of the psalm on them, i.e., "He anoints my head with oil," and "He leads me beside still waters". Each person left the room with a phrase tucked behind their nametag, just as each will leave TeenStreet with something new to think about: perhaps a renewed faith, new friends to encourage them, or a new understanding of God's love.

2060 adolescentes se reunieron por una semana en Oldenburg, Alemania, donde se realizó TeenStreet, una Conferencia Juvenil de OM. Al celebrar su 18 aniversario en Europa, TeenStreet alcanzó la “mayoría de edad” este año, pero obviamente el evento fue tan enfocado a los adolescentes como antes.

Cada aspecto de la diversidad de TeenStreet es asombroso. Los adolescentes representan 19 países, y los traductores trabajaron en simultáneo para que cada participante tuviera el programa en su lengua madre a través de auriculares. Los talleres abarcaron una gran variedad de intereses, demostrando cómo la cocina, los grafitos, las artes, el ajedrez, los coros, la moda o la creación de películas pueden ser actos de adoración. Los participantes se reunieron en grupos de seis más un líder, y juntos debatieron qué estaban aprendiendo y qué dificultades enfrentaban.

El tema de este año fue: “S XXIII”, traído de la vida de David. La adoración, los talleres, el tiempo silencioso, y las actividades en grupos pequeños se enfocaron en la suficiencia de Dios, en cómo David pudo decir en el Salmo 23: “Nada me faltará.” Durante las sesiones de adoración, los líderes distribuyeron hojas de papel con porciones del salmo escritas, por ejemplo: “Unges mi cabeza con aceite;” y “Junto a aguas de reposo me pastoreará.”. Cada uno dejaba el salón con una frase pegada atrás de su gafete, de esa manera, todos se irían de TeenStreet con algo nuevo en qué pensar: quizás con una fe renovada, nuevos amigos para animarlos o un nuevo entendimiento acerca del amor de Dios.
