Breaking the language barrier

Amongst the 266 short-term participants to join OM South Africa’s Ultimate Goal Challenge outreach in June was a Dutch couple in their late 60's.

After participating in OM South Africa’s orientation programme, they travelled to a local church where they worked for two weeks. Upon arrival, the pastor eagerly took them aside and said there was a lady who had been visiting their church recently. “She only speaks Dutch,” he said, “and has a few questions about a book she is reading – can you help?” Much to their surprise, the book she was reading had been written by the Dutch woman’s father and she was able to answer the lady’s many questions.

Although OM South Africa initially planned to place teams in a 400km radius around the Johannesburg and Pretoria area, teams were also sent to Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban. Teams were involved in strengthening rural churches, anti-human trafficking in the inner-city, soccer clinics, reaching foreigners and praying for North Korea.

Entre los 266 participantes de corto plazo que se unieron al Desafío el Gol Supremo de OM Sudáfrica en Junio, hubo una pareja holandesa con más de seis décadas de vida.

Luego del programa de entrenamiento para los participantes, estos viajaron a una iglesia donde trabajaron por dos semanas. Luego de llegar, el pastor los tomó con mucho ánimo y les dijo que había una señora que estaba asistiendo a la iglesia desde hacía poco. “Ella sólo habla holandés”, dijo. “Y tiene algunas preguntas acerca de un libro que está leyendo. ¿Podrían ayudarla?” Para su inmensa sorpresa, el libro que estaba leyendo fue escrito por el padre de la mujer que llegó desde los Países Bajos y, por lo tanto, pudo responder a todas sus preguntas.

Aunque la idea original de OM Sudáfrica fue ubicar a los equipos en un radio de 400Km alrededor del área de Johannesburgo y Pretoria, hubo equipos enviados a Ciudad del Cabo, Port Elisabeth y Durban. Los equipos estuvieron involucrados en animar a iglesias rurales, programas anti-tráfico humano en las ciudades, clínicas de fútbol, alcanzar a extranjeros y oración por Corea del Norte.
