Church teams reaching out to unbelievers, orphanage school teams and orphanage graduate soccer team take part in OM Ukraine soccer tournament in Odessa province.
On Saturday the 25th of March, OM Ukraine presented a soccer tournament in which both church teams and Orphanages school teams competed. All through the year, Maxim Schlikov works toward spreading the idea of reaching the unreached through soccer, leading his own team “Lighthouse” for orphanage school graduates and encouraging others through projects like this tournament.

“It was a blessed time.” writes Maxim. “Children from different schools and regions of Odessa played football together, showing team spirit and leadership qualities, achieving victories and suffering defeats, doing everything together.”

For some of the participants, it was a joyful first opportunity to play on artificial grass, in an indoor stadium and show off their team at the tournament.

“For this tournament, I invited my unbelieving friends from the senior Lighthouse team to compete. The guys loved it, they have wanted to participate in such a tournament.”

On the field, there was a lot of struggle, but the ‘fight’ was only during the games. Even though during the games team leaders showed themselves very loud fans and rivals, they were exchanging phone numbers after their matches. And talking about when and where they would have the next tournament. The children played together and sat down with those with whom they were enemies with on the field just ten minutes ago. Afterwards, they happily pounced on cooked sandwiches, juice, yogurt!

At the end of the day was time for reflection and chatting about this tournament and what one can take away from football and apply to our lives. All ended with a common prayer.

Maxim reflected on this day: “Today every child had the opportunity to hear that God loves him, and they could feel it. It was encouraging to see these (sometimes very wild) kids also try to show their best side.”
